“James Condon”

I bought this generator from a local guy (Jason) who buy and sells used power equipment. I was told the engine was previously stuck. He got the engine unstuck and running well. He later sold it to a contractor who promptly returned it a few days later after the engine stopped running. The…

  1. Any info for an overload light on a predator 9500 inverter gen? I replaced the inverter with a used one from a machine with a dropped valve, so not a known good unit but could infer. Still showing an overload light. The primary dc winding is producing power at 14 volts. The secondary ohms at .7 so I assume, yes I know what that word means, it is good. When I unplug the secondary feed to the inverter board; sometimes the machine starts to die, I plug it back in and the generator roars back to life and I get a green output light for a second then back to overload.

The alt tests fine I think. Both sides ohm at .4 and are producing 185ish volts each. Seams really high but the diagram indicates it’s 3 phase power from the alternator.

Any productive ideas are greatly appreciated.

  2. Maybe it was running and had water in it. The oil and water will still lubricate and the oil would most like separate. The water gets to 180 degrees opens the metal a little and cools down, impregnating the oil in the casing.

  3. Another brilliant repair and another generator brought back from the dead! I dunno, that crankcase looks to me almost like it had seawater in it, that corrosion was really bad. Great work and attention to detail, James!

  4. Durning most of the 1st part of the video, i was telling myself over and over, "wow, that is a clean machine." Then BAM! learned my lesson don't judge it by it's looks. I'm with you James, something other than oil was put into that crankcase some additive or something that started to eat away at the aliumin much less the iron also.

  5. Another nice job James. My guess is gas leaked into the engine and turned bad. Too bad that hour meter looks so bad on the nice looking panel. What happens when you connect a bonded generator to the house? Do you know why the engine bolt heads were blue on the original engine?

  6. Whew man that's gross inside. It's so risky buying used generators. I bought a used 16hp Vanguard based generator for cheap, and got lucky with only minor issues – But I probably won't risk it again.
