No offense to you Salty , but Sonic 3 is not meant to be Sonic Adventure 2 the movie it's trying to do it's own thing while borrowing aspects of Sonic Adventure 2 so really there's nothing wrong with Gerald being alive if they are doing their own thing without being disrespectful to the source material

It's amazing how they're recreating that one moment from the Shadow 05 opening, since Jeff Fowler (the director of all the Sonic movies), was a FX artist and his first job was working with Sega on Shadow 05, animating Shadow in the opening cutscene. So I think this movie means a LOT to him if he were to reference it, I mean imagine being the director about a movie starring the very character that you animated as your first job.
