Sounds like a very reasonable plan. I am on a similar path planning phase. I am curious if the shop that you are using for the trans adapter has any experience with the Merc M120 to boxster gearbox, that is if you'd be willing to pass on the question and let me know contact info or etc if the answer is yes.
