No one really follows this rule and if one follows it, you will have to buy Maruti WagonR even if you earn 1 lakh per month.
I just bought a brand new Kia Seltos (18.5 L) and my income is around 12.5 LPA. So, what I did is I bought it all in cash. I used up all my savings of 1.5 years and bought it. Because I feel that only buy that thing which you can pay in full (exceptions are any property/capital for business and maybe for home).
That veing said, I did 0 Rs investment for the last 1.5 years, since I have started earning, and am going to start investing now. Also, I'm not married and live with my family (father also earns) and I'm 25. But I had already decided that the first thing I'll buy is a car that I like, which I did. So it all matters on your personal situation and circumstances. 🙂
