  1. I hate your channel 😂 Every time I view another of your videos I go on the hunt for whatever camera you have been shooting with. Here in Australia the only real issue is A) getting my hands on the model I'm after and B) the horrendous cost of second hand cameras. I don't know what it's like in other parts of the world but here…..CRAZY. Love the way you review. You actually spend time with the camera and give a heartfelt opinion.

  2. This goes to show that we hit the level of where cameras can make a great photo quite some time ago. The first generation cameras obviously weren't quite there but we hit the peak / golden spot pretty quick. Also goes to show the numerous cameras and camera updates these days are just adding convenience and more machine language type features. If a camera from 2000 in the right hands can make something that stands today then we hit the peak.

  3. Hot lips! I like the Canon G2 – I still have 2 of them, one silver and one black. I may dig them out over the holiday season. Thank you for the great videos this year – always an inspiration to NOT ignore the older equipment. Happy holidays xx

  4. Thx for this interesting (as always!) review. 🙂 I once owned a G2 – unfortunately it was stolen a few years ago. 🙁
In my eyes the G2 felt a bit like "the little sister of the 300D" – back in 2004 i used it f.i. on some bicycle-tours as my compact companion. The image quality was astonishing good – after a bit post processing i sometimes was able to create images, that looked, as if they were shot with a dslr. In my eyes the G2-images already had a bit of the look and feel from the upcoming Canon DSLRs (300D, 10D, 20D etc.) – okay, maybe with a bit more noise and a bit less dynamic, because of this early sensor generation. I also liked about it, that you can use the same batteries as in a 300D or 20D.
But you see: I still like (love?) the little G2. A very special little camera.
Greetings to OMTC and all the other G2-fans.
PS: Later i bought a G6 and a G7. The G6 was also stolen – at least my G7 is still "alive and kicking". As you said: They all are different from each other.

  5. Just taken delivery today of my second Canon G3… pretty much 20 years to the month I for my first one after the birth of my daughter. Your video along with Lucy Lumen’s prompted the repurchase 🙂

  6. Hey! About the date battery – it's actually really simple to replace. The date battery is inside the battery compartment, just look inside you'd need to pull it out as it's in its own little plastic sleeve. It's a flat CR2016 type you can buy anywhere. And it won't bug you with this godawful set date screen everytime 🙂

  7. The S45 has the g2/g3 sensor and shoots RAW and cost less than $50. I always loved the 4mp sensor from canon . Super awesome but it's more of an assault weapon than a camera 😁 This thing is a brick. Keep 'em comin. I have to say, my f31fd is still blowing my mind though.

  8. Lately I have been obsessed by this camera, funny because I own so many cameras from film to digital to digicams, but I dunno I just love the look of the images straight from the G2. I love the digital noise at ISO 400, you loose some details of course however this reminds me so much of a cheap point n shoot film camera. I have used this in very dim lighting and I could still shoot it at around 1/30th, I have a feeling that ISO 400 for this camera is equivalent to above 3200 for modern cameras, maybe I'm wrong I dunno. Nice strong flash too! I had the silver version but I found a affordable black G2 last month, so now I'm rockin' two ! Speaking of rockin', love the hair!

  9. A couple of points I have noticed about this family of Canon cameras:

The adapter tube on these is an absolute must! Why? Typically the PowerShots you see on eBay (the broken units) are ones with a faulty & jammed motor gear. This was an entire era of Canon digital cameras which were plagued with jammed motors. I knew someone whom worked in a warranty repair center for Canon P&S, and this was the #1 most common failure. Basically dirt, sand, hair and gritty buildup gets in the gear mechanism which seizes the lens extension/retraction.

DIY Solution: you can restore some of these by gliding a strip of paper along the barrel to free the debris blocking the motor gear – or, just don't allow these to get jammed in the first place. Once the motor goes, these are bricks. So get an adapter tube! Basically the adapter tube acts like a shield and essentially 100% prevents debris getting in the zoom housing & gears. And you do not need to thread a lens addon either, just put a clear UV filter to cap the end to make it completely closed and protected.

Lastly, some Canon P&S allow you to put custom firmware on them. (CHDK Wiki website)

Essentially you can make real long exposures with some of the mods. Time lapse exposures. Add RAW capability on the later P&S that dropped the feature. Etc.

Anyhow, thank you OMTC for being a pioneer content creator for the vintage digital community.

  10. 5:26 Not sure if this applies to the G2 but on my G5 you can press the SET button after you've taken a photo and it will let you save a RAW photo! Have to be quick though, once the preview disappears you're stuck with the JPEG version

  11. Well done. I have the G10 that I bought new back in the day. It did the job and I really liked the mechanics of the camera. The output did not exceed expectations, but I still get it out to play with it. I had a G1X mk II on it's way as an Ebay purchase, but the USPS has lost it. I am frustrated and now have lost interest to try for another. I do expect to get a refund.

  12. I got one of these when it came out. ‘Twas a step up from the 2mp Nikon I previously used, though the Nikon handled infrared pic taking much better. That G2 still works fine…one of my neighbor’s kids has it now.

  13. My favourite Point&Shoot by far! On a daily basis I use a Canon Ixus 85 IS because it's tiny but whenever I wanna take "serious"-ish photos and don't want to take out my D700 or my E-M5, I happily take out this old G2 and get perfect photos.

  14. Not a camera if you are in a hurry. My 1st camera digital camera. My Olympus E10 was the next mental camera I got. I still love the color of my E10. The G2 was fun, albeit limited in scope. My Brother has this now. I had moved on. The E10 is my Camera I think really was my happy leave of film. The G2 was about what is/was digital is/was about. Not anywhere close to my favorite camera. But it got me started. My Sonys and much newer Canon are warp drive compared to this horse, and buggy of this. So I look at this as fun toy, and that is about it. And some fun memories.

  15. I've had a G2 for about a year now. My first digital camera was a Canon PowerShot S50 – a great little camera, that has a lot in common with the G2. Picking up the G2 was like going back about 19 years in time for me – except with all those years of experience, I have gained a lot of understanding about photography, and it shows in how I use the G2 now compared to how I used the S50 back when it was my only camera.

  16. Like the g1 need a new battery. Good it's available. I do dislike the playback switch. I'm gentle on it. Worried it will break. Great with flash for sure. That's how I use it.

  17. I bought the G1 in 2000, my first digital camera. Absolutely loved it! I worked around its limitations – just accepted them, really. Made A3 prints from a few photos – just don't look too closely! When I look through the family albums, mostly 5×6, I have to remind myself that the photos were taken with a 3 megapixel camera. I think the lenses on the G cameras have always been good too and that goes a long way.

  18. As usual, excellent review! I love my G2 ! However, when going out on a sunny day I have such a hard time choosing between the G2 and the Olympus C-740. They seem so similar in handling (or lack thereof) and both output wonderful images and colors. Because of you I'm planning on taking the G2 to my next holiday party and shoot lots of flash. Happy Holidays to you and yours! 😀
