“Retro Game Corps”

Today we’re going to set up a retro handheld to be so simple and intuitive that a child (or a non-tech-savvy adult) can navigate it with ease. I’m calling it “StarkOS” — simple, tailored ArkOS, and can be set up on over a dozen different handhelds. It takes a little work, but the end result…

  1. I really wish that as a kid I would've had options like these, but technology and emulation had not been simplified, nowadays you get all these front ends and launchers, which besides making your game libraries look cool and organized, ones like Launchbox even provide options to see game previews, and also give a ton of data for the games you set up there, and because Windows handhelds are becoming standardized, there are far more comfortable options now, which is why the newer generations are blessed, and its too bad that game companies don't believe in preservation, because a ton of these games are just becoming lost to time, and acquiring emulators and ROMS keeps becoming more difficult.

  2. Tangentially related to this video, but is it possible to just get the plastic exterior and buttons of the RG353P such that we can make the RG353PS look like the NA SNES version? Just picked up an RG353PS from the AliExpress sale and am getting nostalgic about the SNES.

  3. Hi Russ, I'm trying to decide if I want to use video filters or shaders, I'm running GBA on my RG556. it scales to 6x integer, but at 4.3", it gets to 4.8" otherwise so I think it's worth exploring. I'm going to try sharp bilinear for a while, but since its just GBA (not that intense a system) if I there's a better result to be had via a video filter I'd be interested in exploring it. What would you recommend, for wanting to use all 4.8" of screen at the 3:2 aspect ratio?

  4. This is such a great video and it's got me thinking about all the people in my life who I'd love to give a device setup like this. My kids, for sure, but also both of my brothers. Curating it with a bunch of the NES/SNES games we grew up playing together would make a really great gift. Ducktales, the original Final Fantasy, Mario Bros., Super Mario RPG, Mario Kart…there are a bunch so I'd have to think about the top 20 or 30 to put on for them.

    Such a fun project!

  5. I'm using these tips to improve my anbernic 353v for myself. Just enabling quick load made a world of difference to me. And I started using the favourites menu too. It's cool seeing all of the zelda games standing next to each other, ready to play

  6. I love the idea of using the RG353PS for this. I want a handheld with everything up to PS1 as well as some classic mame games like Marvel Super Heroes, etc. Do u sell builds already done like this or know where to get one? Not trying to set it up myself because I rly don't have the time

  7. One recommendation is to prune down the number of ROMs to a "best of" list. Sure it's tempting to load up the system with the full GoodTools sets, but 90% of the time people are going to want to play the games they know.

  8. How do you make menu and game covers stretched? Also the newest version of ArkOS has more options in themes and whatever I do I cant make it big like on your video. Thank for any help.

  9. Given the analog sticks, I'd go with the original Spyro series on the PS1 and a custom controller setup, since you also use RetroArch, and I'd add in every FF game through 9, but especially I would highlight FFT since it's the best FF game. I would also add in every Super Mario game through 2, or is that World. As for GameBoy games, I'd go with that black and white scheme because that actually looks pretty cool. In case anyone asks, yes, I am an adult child.

  10. I (along with quite a few others it seems) am interested in a similar guide for the rg35xx-h and related devices. I'm guessing, though, the cfw has to mature before it's worth putting all the work into another video like this.

  11. I gave my daughter my rg35xx. I didnโ€™t do anything to it but now Iโ€™d like to customize it for her. Sheโ€™s 32 and is a life long gamer. She did ask for a couple games from her childhood to be added that were not on it. What is your suggestion to do with this older handheld? Itโ€™s just the base model from a few years ago. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks for the great content.
