  1. Glad you discovered the versatility of the trusdx. I built my first kit when they first came out. It's a bit noisy and the front end can get overwhelmed by nearby strong stations but for the money is the best Tri-mode (digital, cw, SSB) compact solution available. Now if Hans at QRPLabs ever gets the SSB TX fixed on the QMX, then it will replace it. You have to admit, it's better then dragging around an FT-818. I have two fanny pack kits using a trusdx and QMX each with k6ark EFHW, and talentcell. I store each in it's own pelican M40 case to keep them safe from the weather in Canada. As much as I love those kits, nothing comes close to the KX2 kit set up exactly the same way. Once you get over the price and learn the menu nothing beats it in terms of performance, portability and features. No wire mess. Keep the videos coming.

  2. Love these honest field trials, great learning experience. Thankfully I will never experience the hot, dry, prickly desert you operate in! Instead I have a rain forest climate, bears, snakes, and boars. Oh well, can't have everything. Excellent vid Sir!

  3. Would you explain how to create a radio network in a local area or describe your network? I got my license for the prepping side of it, but the reality is this: contacting random 70-year-old ham operators located 1000 km away is pretty useless if we dive into seriously troubled times. I have no relations in my local area who would be inclined to become radio operators. I still practice field radio thanks to the SOTA program, and I feel excited about it, but yeah, what's the point of field HF radio if you have nobody to contact ? At home I could imagine that my radio skills and equipment could be used for the whole village, as a community service, but for the rest … I'm sceptical.

  4. Another use for the mylar shelter: Set it up near vertical like a wall across from a camp fire. It will reflect the heat back to you. Very good in an emergency if you are battling hypothermia or drying wet clothes.

  5. Ouch! I felt that big rock. One thing I learned years ago in a motorcycle safety course was that if you look at it, you will usually run into or over it. Always look where you want to go, not where you are actually at on the road. 73! kc8owl

  6. The stone tied inside the blanket is called a button stone, at least according to the guy who taught me😂 It works great, and has a higher tear-away strength than a grommet in most materials.

  7. The reviews I've seen on that charge controller from reputable sources is that they are hit or miss as far as RF noise. Some have none, others have at random frequencies. If you get it from Amazon you can always exchange it until you get a quiet one.

  8. I sure hope the Cholla didn't get you!

When The Girl (my dog) and I are down in that part of the country, I watch her like a hawk. She is not desert aware and my fear is that she'll get into a Cholla and then I'll spend the next several hours locating a vet and getting her treated!

I was a little surprised that the LiOn battery fully charged on the LFP charge profile. I think LFP batteries charge at a slightly lower voltage although with a similar profile. Good work!

Will you write up an AAR for this expedition?

  9. On the last part of the video I just had to laugh. I do the same things when I use the radio even when I have cell service. But with my mom and she hates it. But other than that good video and after some testing I would like to know what charge controller that is and what you thing. I need a upgrade for my manpack and for my battery box I am makeing.

  10. For a solar charging setup I use a small foldable 20W Goal Zero Nomad 20 panel and an Antigravity Batteries XP-10 Micro-Start (16,000 mAH). The nice thing is that their Micro-Starts have the charge controllers built into them so the solar panel can be plugged into it directly with no additional controller. Additionally, the XP-10 has 19v, 12v, and 2 x USB outputs for running several devices.

  11. @2:22 I'd definitely be interested. I can probably get some ideas from it just like I do with your videos, and since I'm a part of your discord now, some ideas from others.
