Fixing Hydraulic Cylinders. Re-pack, Re-rod, CAT D3 Dozer.

The old dozer has a case of the drips! 3 hydraulic cylinders need attention, and I go through them in depth, including installing new hardened chrome rod. A few curveballs along the way, but in the end I think they are good as new, and probably won’t need attention for many, many years.

  1. Man I have done a lot of work on this old machine! But she's really shaping up nicely. Only 2 things remain. Welding the track grousers, which I will do at some point. And dealing with the engine and it's oil consumption. I need to look into that further, but it has a lot of blowby so I'm pretty sure the rings/cylinder bore are the problem, maybe just in 1 cylinder, maybe all of them. If it was the bore(s) I would have to remove the whole block and sleeve it, ie: big job. If it was just rings that would be better, but still might need to pull the engine. Not sure there's enough room to do it in frame. But the CAT 3204 engine isn't considered an awesome engine anyway, and the machine works like it is…so I'm just not sure it's worth all that work. I'm going to start using 30 weight oil in it and see if that helps the oil consumption. Ok, I'll quit rambling now. Have an awesome weekend folks!

  2. A couple of tips from a career heavy equipment mechanic. 1. Instead of using heat to loosen the gland nuts from the cylinder a few good hits with a 1lb sledge on the outer circumference of the gland nut will loosen the threads. I've rebuilt over 1000 cylinders in my day and never needed to use heat. 2. The vacuum on the pull tank has no effect because the lines go to the valve which is closed, not to the tank. As long as the pressure is relieved before disconnecting you should get very little oil.
    3. The flat backup ring is used behind the o-ring to prevent it from being squeezed out under pressure.
I enjoyed the lathe work portion of the video. Very nice job!

  3. Silly me, but i think you should have made an upper and lower spacer on the blade cylinders connections splitting the difference
Or re welding the bracket on the blade.

  4. Honestly the old cat was a fixer uper. But you've raised the value of it with the documented work you've done to it.
Someone you've become a good hydrlics mechanic, i go one further
Youve become a heavy equipment mechanic.

Just an idea, if you ever want to turn that into a turntable for welding round stuff outside dia.
Old power window motors out of a car run real slow speed or you can break down and buy a dc stepper motor that is strong enough to turn the part.

Belive it or not belts and a washing machine motor can do it too.
Or someone's old tossed out treadmill if its a real old unit you've got speed control. They use DC motors.

The plug in type speed controls for fans at 120 volts are not a good pick as the speed slows they loose power, dc motors turn the same force at any speed the voltage is.

  5. The dollar general has a semi clear plastic liner for shelves and such. It has a light texture on one side. It would be perfect for your with bench. With the green cut pad on top of it.

  6. Man doing all your own stunts, getting your finger bashed. almost ripping the vice off the table while putting foot to pipe and getting all the foot pounds of torque.. potential fall hazard with no safety vest and no soft mats to land on.. – good work as always – maybe soon yeah can get into doing bigger pistons like cutting edge engineering does XD

  7. I’m pretty sure I heard the plywood work bench top under your vice holler uncle too many times when you were standing on that pipe extension on the breaker bar. Probably can salvage the area by sandwiching it between a couple 12-16” 1/4 to 3/8” steel plates.

  8. I'm so glad you gave reference to Kurtis at CEE Australia. I've subscribed to his channel for the past 6 years, and thanks to him, I now know how to use my lathe correctly and weld.

For future reference, if you need to weldmuch more like you did on this job, then Kurtis built the perfect gizmo to earth out your work. This gizmo leaves you with both hands to weld and hold a mug of coffee if you like πŸ˜‚

Joking, whiskey would be better πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Noooo still joking. Anyhow, check out that earthing tool of his. You will be able to make it easily.

As for your video, great work as usual. See you next week πŸ«‘βš’οΈπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

P.S. The reason for those hammers is that they are the symbol for my football team, West Ham United, the Irons from Thames Iron Works 😁

  9. Thank you for doing these videos! I have an old John Deere garden tractor which has leaky hydraulics. I never would've attempted rebuilding them myself, until your videos. Thanks again!
