  1. If the first machine has really been used for over 10 years, you can forgive it for having a bunch of bad caps. Being from the era this machine is, those could have gone bad just sitting there.

  2. So good! Not a lot of channel let you enjoy the full content without ever touching the controls. Yours is a very smooth and nice approach to the job! Thanks a lot for sharing your passion here! Greetings, M

  3. If that first system was being used as a shipping computer, then it easily was being used until it finally went bad, which was caused by those caps going bad. A lot of businesses and especially government places are like that, lower priority hardware doesn't get replaced until it absolutely has to. At my workplace, I handle the shipping, and the computer I was using was some Acer SFF brick with a Celeron and Win 8.1. Finally had to be replaced when the newest version of UPS Worldship refused to be installed on Win8.1; now I have an ASUS brick with an 11th gen I5 and Win11 🙂

  4. The 1st system in this video seems to have something to do with System 2 in your "2000's Systems! Teardown and Test!" video, They have the same OS, same wallpaper, and the same software. You seem to have scored 2 systems from the same place!

  5. 23:48 I always found it easier to use pogostick's ntpasswd, mainly because it was bundled on hirens but later I kept fresh vers on flash drives

I think I've heard you mention being in/near nashville before. if so I have a crazy 486 pentium overdive based video editing system I'd like to see rescued. for basic details see the vintagecomputing subreddit and search "486 POD based video editing"

  6. I had a pentium 2 gateway desktop and it was really fast for what it was, it was one of the cow pattern logo cases and really smart looking, similar to the first PC

  7. the reset button noise is caused by the imperfect contact inside the reset switch itself…it's called a bouncing contact…either from dust, corrosion or sometimes soot from sparks :3
    PS: you're cyute >w< <3

  8. @MikeTech What oil do you use on the fan bearings? I ask because I had to replace both the CPU fan and northbridge fan on my Athlon 900 mobo as they were very sticky, but now I see that they can be salvaged with some oil.

  9. The thing you see between Cooler and Heatsink on System one is an era typical thermal pad.
They were that way from the factory and might work the same as they came out of the factory.

    PS: I really don't like them…

  10. These Gateway systems where really well built, in terms of quality and design. Too bad they sometimes used the kinda Dell-ish proprietary parts they put in this 1st one. But damn, in 2000 they knew how to design very convenient PC cases !

  11. Nice to see an NLX FOrm Factor Board.
The Card inside you can upgrade with others, its not too hard to find. However, the best you can do is maybe some Geforce 256 (SDR) Cards like the ELSA Ones, as they stopped making cards with that Layout.
Matrox G400, 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 are other Cards that should fit, thoguh you have to swap the I/O Shield.

  12. I know why you find it so satisfying when those caps fall out: it’s because they’re usually a nightmare to desolder on boards like this! That desoldering alloy is some magic stuff.

  13. For baked on crusty thermal compound, I'd recommend CRC Lectra Clean. It will melt the thermal compound away. Just don't get it on any case plastic, or LCD screens because it will instantly etch and discolor them.

  14. I have to agree with a lot of other people here Mike, your videos are so entertaining, they’re never boring and I love the humour in them – they’re awesome! 👍🏻

  15. I actually have two odd Gateway 2000 systems, one was a 486 DX/33 similar to the SX/35 you have that was swapped out for a socket 7 board by the previous owner (AKA my cousin in the late-90s) and a solo 1150, which looks like a cross between a PowerBook g3 and iBook clamshell.

  16. The first computer was probably sold in 2000 there was a couple of years before XP came out that it would Designed for windows 2000 but if it was a home computer it got 98 installed with the 98 coe sticker. Felt like the odd days back then. lol
    * Edit * Yep I know a 2000 machine when i see one. Gateway was on something good when they made this system i've never seen one built like this before.
