I'm in love 🥰
If the first machine has really been used for over 10 years, you can forgive it for having a bunch of bad caps. Being from the era this machine is, those could have gone bad just sitting there.
I had that p1 Gateway, lots of AoE1 and AOL on that bad boy.
23:54 Sound card works 😆
it looks so easy to service ^_^
So good! Not a lot of channel let you enjoy the full content without ever touching the controls. Yours is a very smooth and nice approach to the job! Thanks a lot for sharing your passion here! Greetings, M
Gateways were impressively serviceable back in the day. I remember going to the Gateway Store as a kid.
If that first system was being used as a shipping computer, then it easily was being used until it finally went bad, which was caused by those caps going bad. A lot of businesses and especially government places are like that, lower priority hardware doesn't get replaced until it absolutely has to. At my workplace, I handle the shipping, and the computer I was using was some Acer SFF brick with a Celeron and Win 8.1. Finally had to be replaced when the newest version of UPS Worldship refused to be installed on Win8.1; now I have an ASUS brick with an 11th gen I5 and Win11 🙂
The 1st system in this video seems to have something to do with System 2 in your "2000's Systems! Teardown and Test!" video, They have the same OS, same wallpaper, and the same software. You seem to have scored 2 systems from the same place!
coming back to watch this later… i Really like the desktop form factor… and kind of miss it
Love the channel. I never miss an episode. 😎
23:48 I always found it easier to use pogostick's ntpasswd, mainly because it was bundled on hirens but later I kept fresh vers on flash drives
I think I've heard you mention being in/near nashville before. if so I have a crazy 486 pentium overdive based video editing system I'd like to see rescued. for basic details see the vintagecomputing subreddit and search "486 POD based video editing"
About the Windows sticker, I think Gateway meant to say that the PC is great for the newer Windows 2000, not that the PC came with Windows 2000.
I had a pentium 2 gateway desktop and it was really fast for what it was, it was one of the cow pattern logo cases and really smart looking, similar to the first PC
the reset button noise is caused by the imperfect contact inside the reset switch itself…it's called a bouncing contact…either from dust, corrosion or sometimes soot from sparks :3
PS: you're cyute >w< <3
I remember when my elementary school got outfitted with a whole fleet of those gateway E-3400. I was like 5 or 6 at the time. Those were good days. lol
@MikeTech What oil do you use on the fan bearings? I ask because I had to replace both the CPU fan and northbridge fan on my Athlon 900 mobo as they were very sticky, but now I see that they can be salvaged with some oil.
Sexy Nerd 1, Gateway Gremlins 1
the question is not if we can, the question is why
this is as productive as reviving a 20 years old dell office pc, better recycle this non special poor quality pos
nice video man
We've had success salvaging sockets from dead boards.
Gold or copper foil to allow the CPU peg to make contact. Maybe get the thing going.
System 2s PSU is a standard SFX type of the time.
They had the Fans on top, now they have them integrated.
They are now MUCH MUCH smaller than that.
For the price those damn computers cost the plastic better be high quality i bought the cheapest computer gateway had it cost over $1,000.00 for a 500mhz celeron in the year 1999-2000
Another great video Mike, thank you. Will we see builds or those fabled motherboard repairs you've mentioned in the past? 😅
The thing you see between Cooler and Heatsink on System one is an era typical thermal pad.
They were that way from the factory and might work the same as they came out of the factory.
PS: I really don't like them…
These Gateway systems where really well built, in terms of quality and design. Too bad they sometimes used the kinda Dell-ish proprietary parts they put in this 1st one. But damn, in 2000 they knew how to design very convenient PC cases !
Nice to see an NLX FOrm Factor Board.
The Card inside you can upgrade with others, its not too hard to find. However, the best you can do is maybe some Geforce 256 (SDR) Cards like the ELSA Ones, as they stopped making cards with that Layout.
Matrox G400, 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 are other Cards that should fit, thoguh you have to swap the I/O Shield.
Long live the sacrificial harddrives 😁
Ouch, Chongx… Stick some Panasonic FMs or Rubycon ZLGs in there, maybe Polys if you're feeling fancy. EEU-FM1A152L, 10ZLG1500MEFCT810X23, A755MS158M1AAAE013
Of all the computers I've ever had apart, that's the 1st time I've ever seen a socket failure!
I know why you find it so satisfying when those caps fall out: it’s because they’re usually a nightmare to desolder on boards like this! That desoldering alloy is some magic stuff.
For baked on crusty thermal compound, I'd recommend CRC Lectra Clean. It will melt the thermal compound away. Just don't get it on any case plastic, or LCD screens because it will instantly etch and discolor them.
That’s so weird it wouldn’t enter protected mode until you replaced those capacitors!
I have had some success with CRC contact cleaner for removing old thermal pads.
Do you ever consider selling your rescues?
OMG yay another video gateway i had one of there desktop computers like that except ours was longer
Good luck with the on call duty. Those are always.. fun
Gateway did not go out of business, they were sold to Acer in 2007 which still uses some of the branding to this day.
Love the vids and that you’re fam. Keep it up bub.
Hey Mike what is the desoldering alloy that you are using for removing caps?
Mike – To get a PGA321 ZIF Socket, try doing a Google Search for "Part #: HWS11107"
You always have the best videos. Thank you.
I have to agree with a lot of other people here Mike, your videos are so entertaining, they’re never boring and I love the humour in them – they’re awesome! 👍🏻
I actually have two odd Gateway 2000 systems, one was a 486 DX/33 similar to the SX/35 you have that was swapped out for a socket 7 board by the previous owner (AKA my cousin in the late-90s) and a solo 1150, which looks like a cross between a PowerBook g3 and iBook clamshell.
There's something about your videos that I like but don't know what it is! I hope someday you could show us the second motherboard fixed
The first computer was probably sold in 2000 there was a couple of years before XP came out that it would Designed for windows 2000 but if it was a home computer it got 98 installed with the 98 coe sticker. Felt like the odd days back then. lol
* Edit * Yep I know a 2000 machine when i see one. Gateway was on something good when they made this system i've never seen one built like this before.
