  1. I love the point about photography what you like. Whether casual or formal. Composed or in the moment.
My best work has been when I am the most taken with the moment – when I’ve been caught in the awe of it all. My worst is when I don’t find those moments or the vibe is just off.
For me it’s less important for family photos to look like what the moment looked like.
I want them to feel what the moment felt like.

  2. The moderator suggests this is simple. Well, I think the guest has developed an explanation of his process that is down to earth, real and accessible. That takes a tremendous skill set and then turn that into action, in real time for strangers with expectations. Now that's not simple…that's top shelf, top of your game stuff. Well done…appreciate your insight and guidance.

  3. Great discussion! For Donna: If you emulate Chris’ style (backlit subjects with lots of sun flare) you won’t need fill flash so long as you override auto exposure modes that would otherwise cause underexposure from being blasted by the sun streaming into the lens..

Otherwise, expect to use fill flash more than not because even if the sun is behind YOU, there can still be shadows on faces or parts of faces you might not want. Just don’t blast them with flash necessarily. Many cameras can have their otherwise auto fill flash feature turned down a bit. EXPERIMENT. 🙂
