E3 on HP tank printers often points at the printhead carriage path or an ink system fault the firmware refuses to ignore. Start with the mechanical path before buying a new unit.
Before you reset anything
- Remove loose paper scraps from the carriage path.
- Check that ink bottles were filled in the correct color tanks—cross-fill confuses sensors.
- Power off, open the access door, gently move the carriage end-to-end if it is not parked locked.
Basic recovery
- Power off 60 seconds, unplug, hold power 15 seconds to drain capacitors, plug back in.
- Run the printer’s Tools → Clean Printhead / Align from the front panel or HP software.
- Update firmware only from HP’s official utility if the panel offers it.

Look for cracked tubes, airlocks after a dry tank, or a carriage encoder strip smeared with ink. Wipe the clear encoder strip gently with a lint-free cloth barely damp with distilled water—never alcohol on coated strips unless HP docs say so for your model.
