I loaded up a thumb drive just to find out this brand new (2 years ago) fancy tv seems to play all sorts of files, but not AVI files. Which i found just bizarre. Like how can it play mp4 mpg mk4 but not avi. Kinda feels like buying a car where the windows can't roll down.
3:21 – good way to describe it!
I used to work in post production duplication, BetacamSP, digibeta, 1inch to vhs or Dvc pro or Betacam Pal to Betacam NTSC and the format that gave the most issues was fudging VHS😡😤 but at the same time vhs was the most rubust 😂
05:50 – Probably it's easier to slide in that clamp back through that hole in the clear plastic. But then again, pushing the tape in and holding it in place for that may be a B.
Have you ever had to splice tapes?
Some TVs usbs only use for firmware updates
Why bother to pull the reel apart when the leader breaks, just use scotch tape to stick the leader back on to the reel, it works fine..
3:22 Holy crap, I have the same label maker model! It's a Brother PT-45.
maybe the customer's TV has a USB port but it is only for factory debugging and loading firmware and not for playing media files. I have older TVs that have USB ports in the back but I know that they don't play media files.
Do you capture via s-video, or only composite?
You've got to charge in this occasion too much work to figure out someone else's problems. If you had a few tapes I understand but most of the tapes or all you won't be able to charge. That's not fair to you.
The TV recordings are probably useless for the customers, but it would be kind of cool to upload them to the internet archive.
the TV problem might be to do with the file system format. make sure its FAT(16/32) (that normally gives best compatibility)
hey @Emerald Coast Digitising where did you get your VHS tape cleaners from
5:49 this hurts to watch. you know those are supposed to slide on and off through the hole in the reel right? instead of popping it out sideways next time try sliding it off up and down.
It's a nightmare to get the leader tape back in when it snaps off the reel, particularly when the hole in the plastic flange isn't lined up with where the little retainer is. I actually keep a few spare reels with leader tape still on them so that if this happens, I can just splice it onto that reel and put the tape back together. No fiddling necessary!
The tape that had previously been opened up may well have snapped in the past and been repaired by the previous owner. I've seen tapes like that – even done it myself back in the day!
Sean, I’ve noticed all your laptops are Mac versus PC. Any specific reason?
I once saw a reel spinning at high speed when stopping the fixed part at a videotape factory, then layering transparent tape and then stopping with a click. It wasn't done by hand.

the tv problem might have to do with the filesystem on the usb drive. Older tvs with usb support might only handle fat32
