  1. The only games it's worth it are the japanese versions of Red and Blue where the reward is Mew, Legends Arceus for the Arceus boss battle, and finally the games where they give the shiny charm.

  2. Gen 1 through 3 not really worth it IMO you would think with less pokemon it would be easier to complete the damn thing but its actually harder IMO if you didn't have a friend with the opposite game who was willing to help you complete the dex or of you didn't have to copys of the game as well as 2 game boys then you were not competing the dex. With gen 4s GTS, things got easier, but it was still in its infancy and still wasn't the easiest. I never completed a dex until BW2 and i been playing sense RBY. These days its pretty easy to complete the dex. Arceus was probably the most difficult because it wasn't enough to just catch them. You needed to do a bunch of other stuff to complete each page.

  3. Unfortunately also in Arceus while you don't need to get research rank 10 to battle Arceus, you absolutely do need to in order to get the shiny charm, and even further than that the shiny odds continue to increase for a pokemon whose dex entry you've perfected!

  4. And then the need to complete it because you're a perfectionist with self esteem issues that rear their heads any time you can't properly finish something. Although that might be more of a niche reason.

  5. What isn't mentioned is that, in Teal Mask and Indigo Disk, completing the Kitakami and Blueberry Dexes inadvertently get you access to Bloodmoon Ursaluna and the other two Paradox Legendaries to complete the trios started by Walking Wake and Iron Leaves.

At minimum, you need to have caught 150 in Kitakami and 200 in Blueberry, respectively.
