In an emergency, you can actually use the spine of a knife instead of a dedicated firesteel, just as long as it's a carbon steel and not stainless steel it'll work just as well. Not everyone carries a firesteel as standard equipment but a lot of people at least carry a decent knife. Scratches up your knife in the process but you can sand all that out later after you're rescued. I forge bushcraft knives with a fully hardened spine for that exact purpose. Other things work as well…files, screwdrivers, chisels, axes and hammers, basically if it can be hardened then it can make a spark with varying effectiveness. The best spark is going to come from fully hardened steel, but in a pinch, you can make tempered steels work too.

If you don't have charcloth on hand, firesteel sparks are unlikely to start a fire, but that gunpowder in your big iron will absolutely light with a spark! Crush it up fine so it'll catch the spark and have tinder around it, only lasts for a moment.

My personal favorite firestarter as a blacksmith is to cold hammer a piece of steel, making it narrower and narrower until the friction of it being drawn out makes it hot enough to glow. From there all you need to do is touch the glowing tip to tinder and you've got a fire. Most prospectors will have a hammer good enough to do the job, all that's needed is to find a big flat rock to use as an anvil, some steel such as bailing wire or a nail or a bolt, not hardened steel though, and preferably a big piece because you'll be hammering on it quite vigorously and you don't want your fingers close to that.
