Honestly I prefer Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi's 2007 design from the GameCube, DS, Wii Era or as I like to call it The Golden Age Of Mario because I miss when Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi didn't have realistic details on their hats, overalls, and shoes from the Switch Era onwards that only works in the Super Smash Bros series and The Super Mario Bros Movie.

plastic, he's never been in a realistic setting until Mario odyssey that i honestly don't see the point, its like a new Kingdom Hearts coming out and mickey actually having short fur around all his body…. the realistic texturing doesn't fit with the artstyle in most cases at all and i think wastes the texture artist's time

I like how they improve his design without completly altering it.
I like this new design. It makes his clothing look more realistic while pretty much keeping the basics.
