  1. Great update. I too am hopeful for additional Z9 firmware improvements. Maybe we will see a Nikon logo change with a yellow to red gradient in it. The R&D capabilities with this acquisition is mind blowing. Sony and Canon have cause for concern in movie market share. Good for Nikon good for Nikon shooters. Kudos Matt!

  2. Matt, have you tried out the portable Smallrig 60B light, it's a strong light for daylight to bring up subject lighting, while still running on battery power. I use it quite effectively. Will give you much better subject separation as your video is quite dark.

  3. So much news! I like the new Dji drone and glasses! ( have to go hang around with Joe 😉) Viltrox is working hard at getting new lenses out. And to me the price point makes sense. You can go and get yourself 5-6 new lenses for the price of a prime. Are they the best no, but neither were lenses back in the day. But photographers worked with them and their flaws to create some spectacular images. Images that have character have life in them. Sterile images though they look fantastic they to me have little life in them. I would get a Ninja over this new Ninja phone. 4 TB SD card is interesting, going to be expensive. I installed a 1tb micro in my Zf, to use for video or overflow if needed.
Well Matt have a fantastic week my friend. Say hello to Joe for me. 📷

  4. Retired long time still photography enthusiast here. A Z5ii or a Z50ii (with IBIS) is what I would be most interest here. … and no machine gun shooting here.

  5. Z mount on RED cameras, Nikon cine lenses. I think that's in our future. I'd love to see a Z mount cinestills hybrid that
shoots open gate with no rolling shutter, compressed raw. It would be the perfect B roll camera on low budget features and great for people like me who need to shoot assets for live action productions.

  6. What is crazy about certain people on the internet is the thinking of that Nikon will destroy RED even after all these public statements of both companies. Nikon has several subsidiaries like Mark Roberts Motion Control or the German SLM Solutions which are doing fine for example.

  7. I have to imagine a bunch of awkward conversations happening at NAB this year. Nikon leadership doesn’t know cine or broadcast, and cine/broadcast doesn’t particularly know Nikon. Add to that a layer of very recent and significant leadership change, topped off with a two-headed CEO situation. Who really knows what will happen? Publicly the two companies have said the right things of course, and yes Nikon may have the pockets to expand Red’s R&D. That I wouldn’t know. But if I were running a major production house that’s built its kit around Red, I’ve already been on the phone talking with competitors. I’m already testing Red alternatives, because if the Nikon acquisition causes chaos, I don’t have the time or energy to let that get in the way of my next deliverable. In the short term I expect sales will dip, especially at the high end. As for merging engineering between the two camera companies, I don’t have the experience to opine on that with any authority, though my guess is that it will take quite a while for the two divisions to reconcile engineering practices so they can readily move parts and ideas back and forth across the Pacific. So I’m not expecting to see anything obviously cross marketed for two years or more as they begin to move beyond the development cycles already underway—that is apart from maybe a Z-mount Komodo.

  8. Hoping for Nikon to update the firmware for (at least) the Z8/Z9 for 240P or faster slow-motion video, even if it's only at full HD. Nikon is woefully behind their competitors in this area, which is sad owning Red.

  9. I am surprised that Nikon has not adopted the CF Express type A instead of sd card slot. This would greatly reduce or eliminate the bottleneck when writing to such a slot.

  10. Nice video, I thought that the video of you speaking was a little dull(low brightness, see 9:19) compare the shots of you and the shot of Keiji Oishi. Clarity is great, the Z8 does a great job.

I'm waiting for a replacement of my D500, and the Z8 is out of my budget. Hopefully a global shutter on an APS-C, 30-35mp is on the horizon.
