“Not Your Friend”

Nintendo has fought against video game preservation for years–often choosing to delete games and communities instead of saving them.

Let’s consider four of Nintendo’s decisions: the shut down of Super Mario Maker 1, the deletion of the Miiverse, the removal of Nintendo Power Magazine…

  1. Howdy all, thank you for checking out today’s video! 👋

Super quick: I want to say thank you to everyone for the feedback from last week’s episode. I’m still trying to find the right balance between comedy and commentary, and I just want you to know that your advice means the world to me. I hope you like today’s episode! 🙏

The topic of games preservation is incredibly important, and I’m grateful for the chance to talk about it (and make a few jokes) about the state of the industry and Nintendo’s actions on this front.

More than anything else, if you’re in a position to support these types of organizations (the Internet Archive, Video Game History Foundation, Game Preservation Society, etc.), please consider doing so:

    Internet Archive: https://archive.org/donate
    Video Game History Foundation: https://gamehistory.org/donate/
    Game Preservation Society: https://www.gamepres.org/en/support/

They need all the help they can get, and I really believe the best way to nudge the industry in a good direction is to vote with our wallets and talk about these issues publicly.

Likewise, check out Moon Channel’s videos (https://www.youtube.com/@moon-channel) for insights into the legal battle that continues to rage on this and many other topics. Their videos are interesting, and highly informational!

Lastly, my friend Apacalpa (https://www.youtube.com/@apacalpa) has given me a lot of support and feedback during my start on YouTube. Please show him some love, especially if you’re interested in repair videos and technology!

Let me know in the comments what game YOU would be willing to fight to protect! (I rant about it in the episode, but for me that game is Final Fantasy 9 … Vivi is my spirit animal.) 😂

See y’all on the community tab! Thank you for being a friend to the channel!

  2. This is because they aren't a video game company, neither is Sony. Microsoft is the closest and even they aren't a video game company. They're a collectable card game company, an general electronics company and a computer company that got into video games. Their philosophy isn't centered around video games.

  3. If you are looking for another company to target, may I suggest Electronic Arts? They have published numerous amazing titles which you CANNOT even play! Some notable entries you should research are classic Battlefield (especially 2142, and I think the Reclamation community keeping it going would be open to being interviewed), Spore and Darkspore (which are absolutely neutered without access to community generated content), and the 'Sim' franchise (seriously, there's so many Maxis 'Sim-X' games that they absolutely refuse to distribute).

Additionally, forcing PC players to have to PURCHASE their Steam copies of games AGAIN just to play them on their POS launcher Origin is absurd, and even then, as an owner of several EA games they let you download via origin (but refuse to let you purchase), it is obscene! I was told by tech support that because I was not the person who ORIGINALLY bought the game (keep in mind the person who did buy it died and I bought it from an estate sale), that I could not get a copy of my license applied to Origin. And I even tried this again for my copy of Command and Conquer 3, which my dad bought, and I wanted to transfer, could not be done, because I did not have a receipt.

The worst part is that I am only scraping this iceberg of issues EA has caused, and it has pretty much made me unafraid to show my absolute anger and disgust at EA, and if they went bankrupt tomorrow, I would rush just to dance on the company's grave.

  4. My favorite game is already delisted lol. My #1 game I have the Gamecube disc, dumped it as an iso, bought a disc of the 360 version, pirated the PC version etc. My #2 game I have as an iso, my other #2 game I have a cartridge and rom. My #3 game I have in cartridge and rom. My other #3 game I have an iso, lost the disc lol. So yeah I would download a rom, no regerts.

  5. There's a Kingdom Hearts game on the DS that is getting a fanmade remaster because Square Enix never included the game itself in the Kingdom Hearts collection because it was a DS game. God bless the fandom.

  6. I think a Moogle is my spirit animal lmao. I think the spirit animal thing is dumb and doesn't make sense to me, but if I had one it would represent a Moogle, Kuppo. =P

  7. Thanks for the new vid, Clyde! Also, I just heard you mention FF9! Ohhhh the memories flow back of chocobos, moogles, Ozma, Queen Brahne's fat disturbing lookin ass, Zidane, ViVi, Garnett, Freya, Steiner, The Petrified Forest, Eiko, Quina, and so many other great moments! Oh, and Zorn n Thorn! Oh, and The Black Waltz # whatever # it is! I keep thinking of the main antagonist or bad guy of the story, and can't remember….Sephiroth is 7, Seymour is 10….9 is…Kujo? Kujath? Bahaumut? Genova? (No, Genova is a name from 7 I believe.) So many hours spent on FF series but one of my all time favorites has been 9!

  8. GHOST TRICK MENTIONED! YES!

If you reading this comment have not played Ghost Trick, try it! It is available on every modern platform, is super accessible and easy for anyone to play and has a free demo available too. You've got everything to gain and nothing to lose.

  9. i feel no pity for someone making a nintendo fan game and they get a Cease and Desist. it is their own fault telling people about it before it was finished.

  10. Hey, nice channel you got. You should totally make a video about how Nintendo makes their newer games and other products sort of the bare minimum in terms of content or effort for the price, such as with the Mario Sports games, Switch Sports, etc.

Honestly, this issue even affects some of the recent games of theirs that I like, such as the Booster Course Pass being nearly half the price of a 10 year old game for courses from a cash-grabby mobile spinoff ported sometimes being worse than even their mobile counterparts, basically a quarter of the content. Or how Mario Wonder (literally my favorite 2D Mario) has literally nothing to do besides the main campaign when even the worst of the NSMB games offered some side modes. Or even how Tears of the Kingdom largely uses the same map as Breath of the Wild. There's a lot that can be talked about in terms of the cheap shortcuts they've been taking with their recent products, especially with the "finish it later" content strategy, and I believe they're doing it in such a way to where not many people would notice or care. It seems predatory in my opinion. Maybe I'm just looking too far into things though, who knows
