Washing Machine 4E Error: Causes and Fixes
A 4E (sometimes 4C) code on many Samsung and similar washers means the machine is not filling with water as expected. Before you call a technician, run through the hose and valve checks below—most 4E trips are supply-side, not a dead board.
What 4E usually means
The control board timed out waiting for the water level sensor to rise. That can be a closed tap, kinked inlet hose, clogged mesh filter, or a failing inlet valve.
Quick checks
- Confirm both hot and cold taps (if dual) are fully open.
- Straighten the inlet hose; replace if crushed flat behind the machine.
- Shut off water, unscrew the hose at the washer, clean the small mesh screen of grit.
- Run a short rinse cycle and listen for the valve click and water rush.
- If the machine fills manually when you pour water into the drum (where the model allows), suspect the inlet valve.
When it is not the hose
Repeated 4E after clean filters can point to a bad water level sensor/pressure hose or inlet valve coil. Those are part swaps—photo the wiring before unplugging connectors.
Safety notes
Never force the cabinet open while the machine is powered. Drain residual water and unplug first. If you smell burnt plastic near the valve, stop and replace the part.
