“Diesel Thunder”

Today we disassemble the right main strut, as well as remove both left and right main transformer-rectifiers for testing. Crew Chief Al had a surprise for me as well!

Our maintenance work and flight operations are funded entirely by donations. If you’d like to help keep these iconic aircraft…

  1. F-4 crew member ! That's some serious work. Like I said last week, I wish I was in Texas, maybe I could hand you a wrench or something. While in the Med. we watched German tech reps replace an inner wing butt assembly. Everybody in the shop would have enjoyed tackling the job but because it was time and labor intensive, they called these guys from the Luftwaffe tech reps instead.

  2. Congrats on your crew status! Say hi to crew chief Al ,I enjoy your videos,
Brings back alot of memories……at the time they happened ,not so happy,
The F-4 is and was a bear to work on…….and it could bite you in a bunch of ways…. I've got scars on my back to prove it , but what an aircraft! Thanks
for your dedication to bring back memories to old timers like me !

  3. It’s takes a lot of ground hours for every flight hour & thats when everything is code 1 (no problems).
Have to remember the F4 is a product of the 1950’s with several redesigns afterwards.
    She’s a smooth, strong flyer!

  4. Congrats on the cool shirt and recognition phor your volunteer work on our Phavorite plane. I’m looking forward to seeing her fly again!

I thought I would share an intel dump. The F4 Phantom 2 Society has been going to Greece in July for PhanCon or Phantom Convention. These are great fun. I went in 2014 to Tyndall AFB. The last year the Phantoms were there. The Hellenic Air Force allows us on to the base named Andravida. I just heard today the F4 retirement will be coming up.

  5. Another excellent video!

CONGRATULATIONS on the kudo and the shirt. WELL DONE! Think I’d frame the shirt if I were you.

Question: I keep forgetting to ask, but did Headblur ever contact your organization about scanning your bird for their Phantom build?

  6. I'll second that Al !
Diesel Thunder is doing an historically important service in documenting what it was like to maintain one of these jets (albeit at a leasurly pace compared to when they were in active service ! ), and in contributing skill and knowledge in actual diagnostic work and repairs.
To kick, it brings great joy to myself (and I think to others too) who have worked on Phantoms or simmilar aircraft.

And a big thanks to yourself, and everyone there at the foundation.

  7. good heavens… mounting parts behind the seat, thereby requiring you to pull the seat to access it? I'm starting to appreciate having worked on A-4 Skyhawks even more. 😄 That "shrink link" is interesting. There was a similar rod used on the Skyhawk's nose gear to get it to fit in the available space.
