  1. LA7845 is available relatively cheaply in the UK – whether genuine is a different story mind you. What sort of taxes would you get hit with importing from the UK?

  2. In finland if employee makes a mistake and something brakes, he gets paid overtime to repair it and the employeer (or rather their insurance) pays the damages. Never would you have to pay for the damage you coused, unless you intentionally did something seriously wrong and even then the employeer may be responsible, the court sometimes decides it

  3. Just checked on Digikey they have 19,389 in stock at £0.28 inc VAT but they will only supply them in bulk
with a minimum order of 1025 costing £245.44 how crazy and frustrating is that!
I will try asking around my contacts here in the UK, but most of them are like me semi-retired
and all the places that used to stock them have long since ceased trading.
Today's throw away culture has put them out of business.

  4. Oh boy, cracked solder joints! September of last year I got a 1990 19-inch Sony from an old-timer which was used as a break room TV at his manufacturing business for just about eternity. I got it home, took it apart, cleaned out the copious thick layers of dust, and adjusted it a little bit. Right before the weekend was over I noticed that the input board was intermittent; naturally, it was cracked solder joints. I fixed that up and took the set to college and used it for the remainder of the year. It was a fine set, a bit soft, but reliable. Fast-forward to this summer and I decided to sell it, but it still had an issue where the "Video" text would appear on-screen randomly. I tore the set down and resoldered every damned joint in that set. Ran out of solder in the middle of it. It was full of bad and nearly-bad joints that were just about making contact. I also stripped the set down completely and washed each part with soapy water, including the tube, and re-adjusted the picture very nicely. Good project, and the new buyer was very happy.

Also, ooh, an HMI light. I've been keeping an eye out for a set of decent ones for filming, but they're unfortunately still pretty pricey because they're still commonly in-use. I'll stick to my kilowatt halogens for now.
