  1. Elon saying Dojo was a long shot before was overshadowed by the cultish belief that he is the Golden Goose of technology sandbagging the timeline based on a history of being early in his projections but ultimately reaching the goal. (PayPal, Tesla, SpaceX). But the EXTRA emphasis on 'low probability' has shaken many zealots to reality that he is not just sandbagging the timeline. He is admitting that creating a higher standard of compute is MUCH harder than people think, and NVIDIA is way ahead and hard to beat.

The presumption can either be that Dojo may never happen, or that it is more than whatever arbitrary number of years out by a factor of 2, 5, or even 10. Like someone else has said, price targets without a time frame are useless numbers.

  2. Well, building an efficient and powerful GPU is hard. Chamath said it in one of the earlier All-In episodes a while back and as a gamer who did computer science specializing in computer graphics I can confirm that what Nvidia has built so far is an impenetrable moat for a long while. Just look at them from a consumer GPU standpoint, AMD and Intel have been trying to catch up on ray-tracing and upscaling and have not had any success so far. I'm not buying AMD GPUs until they have something to replace DLSS 3.0.

Nvidia was smart to bet big on its onboard tensor cores and RT cores to create quantum leap years ahead of its competition. So as a shareholder, I'm fine with Elon giving Dojo a shot, but I am not expecting them to take on Nvidia's dominance and beat them at their own game. At least not within this decade. But hey, this is the guy who proved reusable rockets are a thing. I do believe FSD, optimus, energy, and robotaxi fleet are strategic moat Tesla have, so I rather they spend billions on Nvidia GPUs and get to work on these breakthroughs than to attempt to reinvent an expensive wheel that may or may not have substantial payoff.

  3. Elon has clearly said this before, that Dojo was a long shot, I know for sure that he clearly answered this in a question at the Q1 2023 call, if I remember correctly. I follow Tesla very closely, watching interviews, listening to quarterly calls and this was not a surprise to me at all, so this is on you not doing your due diligence.
