Restoring a Vietnam-Era Military Watch I Purchased on eBay as “For Parts or Repair”

“Wristwatch Revival”
Marshall restores another vintage watch, this time it’s a 1960s military watch that was probably used in Vietnam. He picked it up off of eBay as a “for parts or repair” project, and sure enough it won’t run at all. Plus the hands have degraded significantly, so it’s quite a project!

First time I don’t agree with the final result. You should have gone trough the extra mile and to that lume again. Is way too yellow 😢
Marshal…I have the exact same watch from my father (USAF, Ret) who has passed away. It runs but has lost it's female stem and crow and has some degradation of the seconds hand. Would you be able to provide servicing on this item please?
I've not been able to identify the watch you are wearing yet, but it really reminds me of my 1970 Heuer Autavia.
Not sure if there is alcohol in the “one dip” but alcohol dissolves shellac. That’s how we use it in woodworking.
The wonderful art of Problem Solving 💖 what a lovely watch
I just picked up a Late 60's or early 70's Ball Trainmaster Automatic for $200USD on eBay that is running, but at about -30sec/day. A 25 jewel ETA 2620 or 2821 movement, still not quite sure, but I am leaning towards the former. I really don't feel like messing something up, so I am hoping to work through my pocket watches first to get comfortable. I have been practicing on a beat up 15 Jewel USSR chronograph. One balance reposition on my Grandfather's 1920 Elgin pocket watch and I was hooked after I saw the 30 year dormant movement start ticking. Thank you for the inspiration, knowledge, and courage to move from the obsolescence of smartphone repair to the investment of watch repair:)
The lume you made looks out of place its an yellow bright, and the dial lume is orange brown.
Yes knowing the rest of the story is a big plus. More please.
Absolutely stunning watch. Such a simple design and a great strap added! Well done.
Good job. If that was my watch, I would love it. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
You Sir, have to loveliest voice in YouTube. How do i become a friend of your? I want a watch serviced by you 🙂
The amount of videos i have watched on your channel and how interesting to me it is.
So would love to get into this hobby but i have "Inattentive Adhd".
Many things i have had an interest in, in the past have stalled and just sit there collecting dust.
Great example is flying racing drones…i look to my left and see half built drone and its been sitting there for 3+ years.
Have a RC ready to fly (RTF) plane under bed for 10 yrs.
I have wasted so much money on things that i never followed through with.
So these days i just watch (get it) videos to fulfill my mental inadequacy……….
Keep up with the great vids, this is eye candy for my brain 🙂
I was about to comment that tritium was only ever used in vials and this was in no way tritium lume. Until I just researched and realized tritium paint indeed was a thing. And I can't understand why it isn't used anymore.
I've been wondering for years if a way exists to re apply phosphor to a radium dial watch as we are nowhere near the half life and it's the phosphor that dies, not the radium.
With the 'Born to Fly' spring —
why don't manufacturers simply create an 'overhang' of metal into which it rests.
That way the 'Born to Fly' spring will be prevented from leaving the recess in which it is sitting — 🤔
Looks great Marshall. A useful tip when putting the setting lever back in. I use a bit of Rodico to hold it in place, then it can be turned upside down and screwed in without it falling off.
Hello Marshall, nice video as usual. Would you mind sharing a link to the lume kit you have? I would be interest in buying it if it is available in Europe. Cheers
Uh Shorter half life usually means MORE radioactivity…
I wonder… what happens if the pression fit thinghy [usually the cannon pinion but here is another one] gets loose?
What is with The sealing of That case
Hi,
Nice job. What State do you live in? Thanks
Funny I was actually taking a drink of my "Arnold Palmer" iced tea lemonade when he mentioned it. The odds had to be high…lol
Do you know where i can get a case back for a FC-245M5S6?
