A Rotary! Yes its been 3 years since I’ve torn down a rotary engine on this channel so I thought it to be rather prudent to reset that counter. This is the engine from what we were told was a 2004 Mazda Rx-8. This was allegedly a bad engine that my brother took back as a core when he sold a good…

  1. I bought a RX8 brand new in 2004. It wasn’t until 2022 and 130k that it developed hot start issues and compression loss. Tore it down and the housings were too suspect to use for a rebuild.
    Love hate relationship with the car. If it was reasonably cost efficient to keep it running I would have 🀷🏻

  2. 40 years ago, l had my first rotary, an NSU RO80, what a car, ended up buying another 2, and still have it today. Looks like the engine you pulled down had been run a lot on low rpm, going by all the chatter marks on the chamber.

  3. In my opinion, rotary engines had to go the way to become easily and cheaply "servicable", not durable (which they never got there). For example, those pesky apex seals could be made easy to replace every oil change (through a slot?) to achieve normal engine life span. As it is, it looks simple and powerful but is actually a can of worms. Impractical for anything but special purposes.

  4. I used to own a 1990 Mazda MX5 back in my 20's (I'm 39 now) many people thought it was a front wheel drive and some thought it had a rotary engine…it didn't it just had the 116 BHP 1.6 inline 4 B61P engine.
    I got caught up into street racing back then due to some good friends of mine running Civics, Sentra Spec-V, Celica GTS, Scion XB and a SS Cobalt with a SuperCharger.
    If my memory serves me right, and I may be mistaken so don't quote me–the Renesis 13-B engines were more dependable in the RX8 however they couldn't handle the amount of horsepower as the old REW 13-B engines in the RX7…but!! Those engines weren't that dependable long term.
    the biggest issue with rotary engines is people not understanding how they work and they get trashed out in the end…mainly in due to people being so used to piston engines.
    That's just me, that's my two cents.

  5. SO have you done a Ford 385 or Mopar RB? I saw the Gen 5/6 454 soooooo, GET A MK IV!. But I really doubt you will ever have a 455 of any make, but IF you do try to make it a Olds Rocket. Second choice would be a Pontiac 455. Buick 455's were garbage, but thee were all different… Yeah I am a BIG CUBE fan.

  6. Hi, have you been able to look at an Australian Ford Barra 6 cylinder? With a bit of work and a turbo, they can put out 750Hp on stock pistons, rods and cam, just need after market head bolts.

  7. Once again, how time flies. The RX-4 came out 50+ years ago, in 1973 .. the RX-7 came out in 1978. Fascinating at the time, but alas, way too expensive for my fledgling entry income into workforce back then.

  8. My brother bought a new RX2 in the fall of '71 or '72. We drove it around 1300 miles down to CA for a wedding and then back home. I remember my brother falling asleep, while I was driving thru the Siskiyou's. I was kinda racing a Porsche thru the mountains. He could out corner me, but he couldn't beat me on the straight sections. When my brother woke up, he questioned why we were about a 100 miles further along than we should be by that time. I just said the traffic was light, which WAS true. I really liked driving it. It was very smooth, and pretty snappy, too. But then, I didn't have to deal with the eventual, inevitable problems, later.

Seems this Wankel did not run with the right oil, high quality 10w40 mineral oil , never synthetic because the oil must burn without residues , a bit like as in a classic aircraft piston engine…had disassembled for rebuilt a RX8 Wankel after 100000km running and was pretty clean inside , but worn seals and need a new nicasil coating

  10. I bought a 1980 RX-7 GS new in 1980 and put 95K miles on it over 7 years. The only trouble I had with it was blowing the water pump bearing. When I sold it, the clutch was shot and I was told replacing the clutch would require pulling the engine. I knew that with 95K miles, the apex seals were a ticking time bomb, so I sold it. I loved that car, it wasn't fast, but it was so fun to just wind it out and throw it into turns.

  11. The fix for these engines could never been done with EPa standards. They purposely burned their own oil but it had to be slow enough to not starve the engine between intervals. People that fixed these up close off those oil ports and run a fuel/oil 2 stroke premix and then you have an amazing rotary. But would never make it like that from factory.
