Samsung phones have a hidden feature (DEX) that gives you a desktop interface when you plug into a monitor. But how good is this? Can it actually replace my laptop?

  1. One major problem I have with dex is not able to use external web cam. I use a laptop docking station to connect all devices to my phone and works pretty well.

  2. I have been using dex for quite a while now. It's not perfect but it's mostly good. My major gripe is that there is no good remote desktop software with it.

  3. This is a big reason that I love Samsung devices. No, I won't be using DeX to replace my computer. However, in a pinch, there really isn't any better.

For instance, if you are on holiday and your family has decided you aren't taking computers with you. If something critical comes up at work and you have to respond, you have the option of a desktop like experience with which you can be productive. If you had an iPhone or Android device without a desktop mode, you would be stuck either working on your phone screen or using the mirroring experience you get when connecting to a display.

In Samsung's mind, you have the power to do it and it would be helpful to some people, why not do it. I like that kind of thinking.

  4. I once connected my phone to my tv and used dex to stream 4 different live streams at the same time lol.

it overheated and showed a warning saying "chrome is making your phone overheat, it will be closed in 60sec" and it closed all of them.
    the phone was burning lmao

  5. Wish they would make it better for gaming. You can barelly do anything with a mouse and keyboard without being clunky. Minecraft works and that's about it. There's no special gestures or combinations, like ctrl+scroll to zoom or any key mapping. They really left DeX half baked for years now. I even tried to play Genshin with a controller, but then it doesn't support controllers [on IOS it does lol], just like a bunch of Android games. It was really good and useful for a bunch of stuff while my PC was off, but at the end of the day I replaced it with a Fire TV since I would mostly use DeX to stream content anyway, and having to plug in the keyboard I use with my PC every single time was way too annoying which made it bad for texting. If you need a computer, you still have to buy a computer. DeX feels like the experience I had using Windows Phone while everyone was having a good time with Android and IOS. There's no apps that take use of such thing and the devs gave up.

  6. I tried to connect phone via usb-c and dex on a real laptop with windows. But laptop have too high resolution. Good look suport higher resolutions only via hdmi😢😢 For me was too bad picture quality.

  7. to me, i am trying to figure out how companies want laptop money for a tablet….. i want do want a media consumption first device with some ability for productivity but Samsung doesn't make it easy…. the tab S9 ultra costs as much as a 2 in 1 without having the ability to really run desktop programs – not even demanding programs, just the many programs which never get android equivalents. they had their linux on dex beta some while back but before i even got to try it, they had already killed it…. tablets really need to do more to justify the price

worst part about it is that, the s9 ultra is not even the best display you can get if you just want to consume SDR content since it will go to about 350 nits of brightness which will only boost under sunlight…. many laptops dont go much higher but it might change soon, the new Surface pro 11 lcd as well as oled have 600 nit sdr displays and the oled goes to like 900 nits for hdr

  8. on my samsung galaxy s21 phone the dex was lacking in these ways preventing me from using it:

    1. missing ordinary keyboard shortcuts of laptop thus not nearly as smooth or efficient to navigate or use.

    2. file management not nearly as clean or easy as on pc.

    3. my pc also runs my canon r40 rapid scanner, something my samsung dex cant do. that scanner is incredibly useful. so like its just another example of if i didnt have my pc but only samsung dex, i would be more restricted on what i can and cant do. like aka running my cannon r40 rapid scanner.

so at moment on samsung galaxy s21 i cant really replace my laptop. however i love the concept idea and do hope for the feature to keep improving.
