Today’s video is about a super boring Dell OptiPlex. Well… it would be boring if I hadn’t found it in the trash despite looking brand new! So let’s see what’s up with this thing.

  1. I got an inspiron 3252 from a goodwill outlet in a big blue bin in the outlet section for $6.52 because they go by pound. Unfortunately, I don't have a power supply for it since it doesn't have your usual psu. I don't even know if it works, and I've had it for over a month.

  2. This reminds me of my first days doing desktop support and I i got a ticket from a small service area and this woman was still suffering along with a GX280 that took like 15 minutes to boot up..
She had an Optiplex 770 that was still sitting in the box and had burned up 2 out of 3 years of warranty just sitting there. Apparently they'd had really bad experiences with other techs who wouldn't migrate their stuff and she never wanted to move it over. She was pretty pleased with the performance boost after that though!

  3. Back when piano gloss was all the rage, I routinely left the protective film on for as long as it would stay on. Piano gloss looks pretty bad all by itself, but scuffed-up piano gloss looks worse. And since piano gloss with the protective film still on doesn't look any worse than that, that's what I went with. Fortunately, our long national nightmare of piano gloss is over.

  4. These machines are on TradeMe (NZ's version of eBay) all the time. Most of them are more than capable of running basic tasks. I use a similar machine for my work.

  5. I have the same pc sitting under my TV. It's runs Truenas and my CCTV server. Mine was free too, a thank you for sourcing and setting up it's replacement for a mate.

  6. That's a good choice for a garage PC, I've been using an identical looking Optiplex for the same purpose these last few years and I love it. Mine's still running Win7 for the time being, I hadn't even considered Linux at the time, but I think that just might be what I upgrade it to next (seeing as Windows 11 isn't an option).

  7. I’ll take it! my hp s5-1414 broke with a motherboard issue and i cant afford a new one and that one was the only windows 10 or updated computer i have😔

  8. I live in a small town with a major university and I have picked up a few optiplexes for cheap from the surplus store. They are pretty useful to have around for this or that.

  9. Man I've worked on so many of these things lmao. They aren't terrible, they're perfectly usable for what they're designed for. And I can attest to the fixability of them, even doing a board swap is fairly quick. The only downside is the use of proprietary stuff that limits how long you can keep them going.

  10. Work for Dell off lease returns, often these are used in an office 2-3 years and for whatever reason some of them never have the plastic peeled off.

  11. i'm kind of a nostalgia guy myself, and my 2011 laptop shipped with Windows 7, and this got me thinking, if i gen a CRT / this kind of LCD monitor , it cloud fit well with the OS! you know what,, umm nevermind…..

  12. I have two of these at the office still looking brand new. Boss already said I coulf leave with one whenever. I'm just waiting for the right moment. Slap an SSD in there and its good to go.

  13. I got an XE2 saved from the dump and swapped in the best server CPU I could find. They are basically i7s. $20. Maxed out the ram to 32gb, SSD and 1060 graphics card. Thing runs like a dream!!!

  14. my school had half these and half some other computer and kids would push each other over to get the other one because it had windows 10 on it so i always associated this one with losing lmao

  15. I nearly got this Dell Optiplex 3020 computer and the other option would be Dell Optiplex 790. I was seeing if I can find a computer that will be my temporary before my gaming one. Both of these computers look similar, but then I found a computer that I will take. The computer is a Dell Optiplex 7050. Which is the pc I am typing this comment on. 🙂 All 3 of them would be refurbished computers. The 790 had Intel Core I5 with 8 GB of memory and 500 GB Hard drive. I was still using my dad's old Windows 7 Dell XPS 8300 computer which is faster than my Dell Inspiron 3580 laptop. The XPS 8300's hard drive was pretty much full. But it had a D drive. I am still planning on setting up the old computer somewhere.

  16. I had a pleasure to work with dozens of these machines.
One time we had an order of 30 of these which needed cleaning, thermal paste change, swapping hdds for an ssd and installing windows on them.
You wouldn't believe how well built these are.
They were made with repair and maintenance in mind, plus they're fairly speedy machines too!
