Many tractor owners have no idea what this knob is for or how to use it. Today I’ll explain what I have learned about my Kubota …

  1. This knob is very useful when using a three point hitch with your post hole digger. Slowing the speed prevents you from cork screwing the auger into the ground, making it very difficult to extract.

  2. Ed, I keep about 800 lbs of ballast on the rear of my B2601 in the form of box blade and concrete blocks. As soon as I got the tractor new in 2022 I adjusted that knob down to prevent the sudden drop from all that weight. When I bought my neighbors older (2013?) B 2620 a year of so ago I gave it a good go-over before I trailered it up to Spokane, WA as a gift to my daughter and son-in-law. My neighbor said "that knob thing never worked…". I showed him what it was for. Oh. After some lube in various places I had his former tractor running like new – like that seat adjustment that he swore it didn't have, etc.! He's a great guy and I talked him into buying a bigger tractor with a backhoe that I can use when I need it 😄😄

  3. Good explanation of the flow control valve! Mine has turtle and rabbit on it rather than open and close. Maybe we’ve lost something in intuitive labeling since 1981 when my tractor was made 😆. That’s more indicative of what it actually does, even though open and close is the actual status of the valve. I adjust mine for every implement. Some by weight (as you describe), and others for other reasons (like controlling penetration rate of a post hole digger). I don’t feather the position control lever to control drop rate. I pick up at the end of a pass, spin around, and lower right to the stop and let the valve control the drop. Makes for one smooth motion that doesn’t depend on me (and my arm) bouncing around in the seat. With a gear drive tractor, I don’t feather my speed (wearing the clutch) like you might do with a hydro either. With the flow control, I can just move the position control lever quickly and remain focused ahead without worrying about the drop. I grew up around tractors, so I’ve never thought of the flow control valve as a little used feature. I can see how some may not need it depending on their application though. Personally, I wouldn’t be without it, or independent (split) brakes.

  4. Ed I understood you use it more for like discs, spring tooth harrows, landscaping rakes. If you drop them hard you bend the tines or discs. Plus it lets it penetrate the ground easily. Less likely to stall out because as you start moving it goes deeper more slowly. If you sink the disc all the way in and stop then start again you might be stuck. But if it start shallow and goes deeper you have momentum. Also attachments cost a lot of money and we expect to use them for a long time. If you drop them hard they will get bent up and need repair. Have a great week

  5. The big advantage is when you have a really heavy implement like a box blade or snow blower that you are raising up and down. It lets you just shove the lever to “down” and the implement won’t just crash to the ground. Also, if you don’t have position control on your three point, you can slow it down so it’s easier to stop where you want it.

  6. I was just curious if you have a ballast box? A few years back, they had all kinds of videos of people buying ballast boxes and then modifying ballast boxes. Then there were a lot of videos of people who made their own ballast boxes. I’d be interested to see what your take would be if you were to, buy a ballast box, modify one, or create one totally of your own design. I know this is only marginally connected to the three-point hitch adjustment knob, but how heavy would you make it and how would you set the knob depending on the weight of the box? I wonder if anyone’s done a study of the effect of all that bouncing and shaking of implements kept on the back of the tractor for ballast. Always fun to watch your videos.

  7. I've got a 2000lbs flail mower…I definitely use that knob to keep my mower from slamming to the ground. It's super important to me. It's also important to use when transporting some implements while they're attached to the tractor. I have a couple that specifically tell you to keep them lifted during transport.

  8. Good Day Sir, 🚧🚧 Sir, I use it often, especially when I have the heavy rear snow blower. If it is not adjusted properly, it will land very hard on the frozen ground 🚧🚧 OUTSTANDING INFORMATIVE VIDEO Sir Ed 👍🧐👌Be Well Sir and Have A Very Nice Week Sir Cheers 🍻🍻
