Well if you can't buy a house in China i.e. you're paying the government to lease it because all land in China is state-owned.. then you're not investing in real estate.

With the 99-year-rent thing with China: the Australian Capital Territory (as it name implies, the 500,000 people in Canberra plus maybe 200 other people) has a similar system, and the government let people renew the land ownership because they're not into pulling dick moves.
