“The Guitologist”

This isn’t a video I wanted to make, but we really need to talk about the new Gibson Falcon 5 and Falcon 20 amps built by Mesa/Boogie. Real talk time. You probably knew it was coming. WARNING: Video includes disturbing images of amp guts / GUT SHOTS of the wacko internal 12ax7 tube sockets!…

  1. Wow, Brad, I share your disgust with the new "Gibson" amps. To be honest, the innards remind me of the Stage Right amp I did a video on a couple years ago. The difference being that the SR was priced at a very reasonable $100, while the single-ended equivalent Gibson Falcon-5 is FIFTEEN times as expensive. It seems like a bait & switch scheme……lure customers with the Gibson/Mesa name, then sell them a $25 PCB circuit in a $100 cabinet. Style without substance. Viewers should thank you for issuing this warning. Once again…..you're the man (even with that crazy hat) 😉

  2. I thought the same thing it was like when fender had those tv twelves fifteen and tens I own the 12 and a 15 nothing but problems and then when you open it up. Everything was connected by ribbons cracks all over the place. It wasn't worth the money.
It looks good cabinets mobile constructed but the quality inside.
    Wasn't worth the weight literally

  3. This is a great video, you have been like Toto from Wizard of Oz, thanks for pulling back the curtain so we can all see the fat little "Wizard" pulling his levers and blowing his smoke over his mirrors… Oh my, this isn't Kalamazoo any more Toto.

  4. Wow! What pile of junk!
I’ve had a few older Boogies. They were junk too! The 50/50 Boogie power amp I had was good though.
Like all Boogie’s the design revolves around ease of manufacture rather than serviceability and longevity.

  5. If it didn't say "Gibson", it would only retail for $400. It would probably cost just a bit more than that if you built the true circuit yourself and it would probably last forever. That's not a reissue! It's just another Gibson Gimmick

  6. Oh man and just when i thought fender hot rod series were one of the most bad designed… Which they still are but not as much as these new Gibson amps. Geez.

  7. You didn't even present any actual evidence that it isn't built well, besides weak complaints, nor do you have one on hand. But we should except your word, because you said things?

  8. I have a Blackstar club 20. El34s, 2 channel that is built with the same type of circuit board. Difference is only paid 399 new and did my research, knew was i was getting into. No way these falcons are worth that kind of money…

  9. Good on you for calling out the youtubers who are shilling for Gibson. They act like friends of the viewer when they are the exact opposite. They have demonstrated a complete lack of credibility. So much for Authenticity! LoL.

Those amps look like hot garbage. I would not even want one gifted to me.

  10. You might be a bit harsh on Gibson. The 5 watt model is $1500. A new 5 watt Swart with an alnico looks to be at least $2100.
I do wonder why they didn't use a rectifier tube to be more like vintage. That would probably add a lot to the cost.
I would guess that the Mesa Boogie people analyzed the design to make sure it would last a while. It does look a bit iffy as far as long term use. Maybe it will hold up better than it seems. FYI I have several 5 Watt Swart STR Tweed amps and several Tungsten amps and a Tone King. I like the old style low watt amps.

  11. Reviewers, critics, etc, that whole ecosystem is largely advertising masquerading as consumer protection. You have to wade through a LOT of crap before you start finding the nuggets of truth.

  12. This is why the Boss Katana and other, similarly priced and spec'd amps make this crate a mug's buy. They'll be a few hundred on Reverb within a couple of years, when players understand just what poor value they really are.

  13. Thank God they didn't just replicate the amp everyone loved, better to just pour an inferior product into a replica bottle and slap a big price tag on it. Surely there must a Chinese equivalent for a fraction of the price, they are begging me to abandon old school Western brands, forcing me really.

  14. I use to enjoy this channel, sorry you can't fix one. Planned obsolescence. Deal with it. How many of us can read a schematic?, so it doesn't matter. Junk it is less than paying you to fix.

  15. The main thing is how it sounds. If you like how it sounds- cool. If you don't, move on. Peronally, I would put that cash towards a Fractal FM9 or Axe-FX III Mkii Turbo all day long. With Fractal you get world-class tones and effects to boot. You would need some power cabs.

  16. I guess at least the pots are connected to the board by wires…I had an old Gibson combo in the early '80's, appeared to be from the "60's, had a 10 or 12 " speaker, reverb and tremolo, sounded great, the ends of the knobs were broken off but could still be adjusted, not sure if it was as falcon or something else, have wanted that amp back ever since, wondered if these would be similar, that's the price of a full hand wired amp.
my used blues Jr 3 works great for what I paid.
