I really liked the music only starting in the last lap because it added a lot of tension.
And they should've have given us a Remake or at least Remaster instead of just a port.
I remember playing the Nintendo 64 version and love the new version on ps4
The Game Boy version was headed up by Isshin Shimizu, the original designer of F-Zero on SNES. I love Shimizu's F-Zero games on SNES and GBA, so I always wanted to enjoy it more than I really do. Never played that one on real hardware though. It did have one of those rare GBC rumble carts, like Pokémon Pinball, maybe that made all the difference. The N64 version is the one I actually grew up with. I loved it at the time and replayed (again on N64) recently. It's still very fun but also has some massive difficulty spikes which are frustrating. The modern port is probably much more responsive and playable simply due to the improved framerate.
I drove 23 kilometers by bike just to watch the movie. Twice.
I used to race every course for 1st place with one character and not buy an upgrade until I finished the final track. Then I would go to that shop to hear the first voice lines as my trophy.
This game need a Remake wirh Unreal Engine 5.
Great game. Not perfect, but easily one of the best tie-in/licensed games.
Upon playing the re-release a couple years back, it became immediately apparent that a lot of the difficulty came from the N64's terrible controller. 😅
I never owned an N64 but Star Wars Racer was the game on demo at my local Walmart. It was there for probably 6 months. I played every time my mom took me there. I would go straight for the electronic section and play until my mom came to get me. And then one day… it was gone… replaced by Turok 3 that I didn't care much for.
Wow.. Is just me or they don't make them that good anymore?
I remember trying to play this on my Logitech joystick. If keyboard was hard, joystick was goddamn impossible.
Man, I spent so many hours on this game as a kid.
I still go back and replay this game often… until Abyss becomes unavoidable. Probably the only blight on an otherwise incredible racing experience.
One thing you didn't mention is the way the payout system and part system works.
You can choose whose gets money in the race payout such as more money for the 2nd 3rd and 4th or switch it to be all on 1st place if you're feeling more risky. Definitely a cool risk vs. reward system, even if you don't really ever have a reason to not put it all on First place.
The part system was also very innovative for the time as they're not just straight upgrades but actually have health. The more you get damaged in the race the health for parts will go down or break and you'll lose the benefits. You can buy either more expensive parts at the shop but they have full health, or get greatly discounted parts at the junkyard but they break more easily. Definitely a cool idea, but something I think would work better for more or a roguelike racing game.
Oh boy, I remember playing this nonstop before even watching the full movie. I knew it was Star Wars related but, I cared more about the whole race thing rather than the lore.
Don't forget you can get it on GOG and play it in 4k there.
just FYI there was an arcade version that controlled like in the movie, with the 2 throttle sticks : push both to accelerate, pull 1 to turn in the opposite direction and ofc both to either slow down or stay airborne after taking a jump off a ramp
Some of the lesser known Racer Pilots are actually in the extended cut of the movie.
Got such nostalgia for this. I remember playing it in my school's computer lab after doing typing class.
Yes, I'm old enough to have done typing classes
Not the best AG Racer. But a decent one.
I know this card is kind of useless, but cranking everything to yolo wont do it any favours, try tuning the settings a bit, crank the settings that actually use the memory and keep everything else low
Watto and his dialog are a core memory for me.
I worked for Sega's Arcade Division when the Arcade Pod Racer came out. One of my all time favorites and I play it every time I come across one.
Would play this on the PC w/ a joystick. BOY was I absolutely fucking DOGSHIT at this game but I loved it anyway
I really wish they re-released it on PC too. I have it for N64 and between the frame rate issues and the N64 Joystick being what it is, it isn't as fun as I remembered as a kid.
Probably not too hard to get the PC version running (I see its on GoG and I already have it on CD), but getting controllers to work on games that old is pretty hit or miss.
Fun fact: The framerate of the game affects the traction of the pods. I have a short about it, but suffice to say a programming oversight inexorably links the two and results in stiffer traction at higher framerates
I had the original on DC. I bought the switch version as soon as it came out. My kids love it too!
No way you throwing shade at Land Before Time Great Valley Racing Adventure sir 😤
Good video tho. 🙂
i played this game for hours as a kid, they did a good job to be honest, different planets with specific themes, unique drivers and vehicles… some tracks were really hard, specially i remember if you did it bad even half a lap, the rest of the racers went away making it impossible to gain positions back.
I had the GBC version and remember being disappointed with it
I played the n64 version as a kid. Lots of fun.
I got the switch version a couple years back and it's a blast. A shame they don't make games like this anymore.
Rayman 2 might be a good candidate for this series, has a ton of different versions with quite some major differences between them (extra levels, bonus levels, different overworlds etc.)
I played the arcade one (Dreamcast comes close)
Stop making analysis, play the games you enjoy and tell the stories of how it was playing them, inserting a lot of jokes.
Anyway, awesome video and channel, I praise for your success!
