DJI Air 3 November Firmware Update and oh yes, a Crash too!

“Idaho Quadcopter”

We had a “bug fix” firmware update for the DJI Air 3 this November. In this video I test fly the drone and go over the menus in the app looking for changes. I didn’t find any changes in the app, but I did find a bug in the obstacle avoidance and APAS feature. The drone failed to brake or…

  1. Marcus, i watched the “crash” several more times. I still believe it acted as if it was in Nifty Mode, even though the menu system did not show any evidence of showing nifty mode. I also agree with you that the drone seemed a bit slower when traversing the tops of the trees prior as well, again, similar to how nifty mode works. Hopefully DJI will inform you of the actual reason for the lack of obstacle avoidance, and not just send you a replacement, while ignoring the reason the oa failed. There’s no way that the crash was pilot error; hopefully they’ll consider it a warranty issue. As stated previously, looking forward to their response.

  2. It definitely just could not detect an object there, seeing it miss twice. I saw something about DJI's OA not being able to detect bright whites, etc as objects so I too think that's what bit you. Hopefully DJI can take care of it for you.

  3. I have a mini 4 pro and I always set the OA to "Brake" and not bypass. The reason is that if drone sense the obstacle and try to bypass it a milli second late can be a disaster. I noticed that on my mini 4 pro you can't even see a single movement when you move your stick when the OA is solid Red.

  4. I had the same situation with mini 3 pro. (I had refresh) I sent it back and gave them logs. It was not user error as it didn’t see the obstacle and crashed onto it. I upgraded from mini 2 and never fully trusted the obstacle avoidance . I have now new drone dji mini 3. I will never rely on obstacle avoidance 100%.

Dji at first asked me to pay for care refresh fee. I paid the fee and they sent the new drone and then I told them I was unhappy with the decision and gave them a full analysis of the log second by second up to the moment of crash . They came back and said that it was an aircraft error and refunded me the refresh fee . So kudos to DJI great great service

  5. 😢 that's very unfortunate. It could have been the color of the building or I seen a shadow also. But the obstacle avoidance was sounding to. So it was seeing it but maybe because of the circumstances it's depth perception was off. And we know that them vision sensors see in black and white also. So if you add all them circumstances up (white building, shadow, seeing in black and white). We may need to be careful. It could been a little bit of all of them together.

  6. Ooppss! I guess DJI didn't get all the bugs fixed in that firmware release! Sorry for your crash, Marcus. Oh, but I was going to say how much I enjoyed the Fall colors and mountain view from the video. That Air 3 camera is a WINNER, in my book! Plus the 70mm option is SO NICE!! Hoping you get things resolved in a timely manner….I'm sure you will.

Your crash into the building has me thinking about any manufacturer's claim about Obstacle Avoidance (OA) with their products. Obviously, it's never 100% effective all the time, but what percentage is it? 99%? 95%? They will never stick their necks out and say, but you have just proven it's definitely not 100% of the time! So, one should fly accordingly when using OA and APAS, IMHO.

  7. I think it`s the pilot and not the drone. the moment you see it`s near a buildings you should to have your hands on the sticks , telephone pols are not allowed to fly over or near by ,

  8. I would be surprised if DJI does not honor the Care Refresh. With 22,000 subscribers that would be a very poor PR move. A much better PR move is to send him a new one immediately. This will be a good test for Refresh. I'm sure they willl make the right decision. Keep us posted too. Thank you for your content always great to watch.

  9. Hi Marcus, Thanks for this video but sorry for your crashed drone. It's a good lesson to learn by us. The Dji Air 3 Manual page 57 says and I quote:
"The vision system can not work properly in the following situations:
    * Flying near monochrome surfaces (E.g. pure black, white, red or green)". In your case, that monochrome colored wall …
    etc…
