This week, iFixIt says they’ll have OLED replacement parts in stock soon, but how soon? And does the Steam Deck’s APU hold a secret? We’ll investigate. Plus, THE SKY IS FALLING! Is this the death of Good Guy Valve? We’ll deep dive into Valve’s DMCA takedown of a fan game.
All this and more in…

My most wanted feature is the ability to stream HDR games from my desktop computer to the steam deck OLED…
Windows keys don’t cost “a couple hundred bucks” for anyone, let alone OEMs.
Extra cores LOLOL.. you mean disabled cores that didnt meet spec..
I really like your sober take on valve’s takedowns.
Great vid, thanks!
5:34 this being the world we live in is WHY I think the concepts of copyright and patents are cancer. I'm more understanding of trademarks, but still not the biggest fan
Time for custom firmware/software to unlock things …
Hint hint devs/hackers here's looking at you!
That little smirk that goes on for a second right after you finish saying "It's Steam Deck news time…", it never fails to crack me up.
I would like a denoiser for the mura effect I got on my 512 Oled Samsung screen. It's kinda distracting.
In my opinion,
I think the only thing the steam deck needs to be perfect is an option for more ram. Other than that, the oled 1tb is the best handheld ever and has no major cons
Don't know how Nintendo would even care about there old consoles hardware there not making them anymore right? It's like saying you bought a Nintendo 64 sense the day it launched but in 2024 you don't "own" that console you are just "borrowing it" sense Nintendo owns your console. There is no freaken warranty sense they long sense expired, I hate when companies for consoles still think that they have full control over a console that long sense ceased. It may make sense on newer consoles, But decade old consoles they are not manufacturing anymore? Stupid!
4:40 actually even if valve won an legal case against nintendo, they would harm thenselves in the process since anyone who love nintendo might become an valve hater, that would be an problem as an result, specially in japan where it will be quite hard for then to enter, take a look at the og xbox and how bad it was marketed for example.
I have a 5800u in my laptop, and a rtx 3050ti, and own a steam deck. Windows handhelds 👎👎
7:20 While entirely likely these cores were removed from the steamdeck OLED, it is also possible they're still there on the OLED SOC and the die shrink is a combination of the new more dense node variant (7nm+++ referred to as 6nm vs the OG 7nm) as well as density shrinks somewhat like how Zen4 and Zen4C are on the same node, but Zen4C fits 16 full cores in the size of 8 cores of Zen4, at the sacrifice of clock speeds.
It is possible that the jump to 6nm allowed for higher clocks, but rather than taking higher clocks, and possibly increasing power usage, valve requested AMD go the other direction and increase compute density, making the die more cost effective to manufacture with even higher yields.
It is still more likely that these inactive structures were removed, but that would require a completely different MASK, where the whole point of 6nm, is so you dont need to make a new MASK
I would love if Valve could figure something out with VR on Steam Deck. I know there's seemingly only a handful of games in VR, but there's a few I want to play that I otherwise can't play with my aging PC. I know the XReal is being promoted a lot, and they keep making improvements, as they go, that includes AR. One of their biggest selling points is it works great for the Steam Deck. But it costs as much as the Steam Deck (or more depending on certain factors) so it's still a luxury item.
1:45 Are they using a custom SOC? Because my 4500u tablet only has 6 Vega2 CUs clocked down to ~1500Mhz, from the 8CUs at ~1800Mhz found on the 4800u(up to ~2000-2100Mhz on 5800u)
No one cares about AI
I want to see motherboards sold in the future with new apus and more memory, like framework laptops.
The deck update fix i'm waiting for (for about 6 months now) is every time I boot up, restart or change to or from desktop mode it says its updating, which it is not.
It may be a thing because it runs Linux but I wouldn't count on it as the apu in the oled steamdeck doesn't have these cores.
Custom Steam Deck Boot video with the 4:02 Nintendo statement coming as soon as I have 20 minutes of spare time.
1:38 ryzen 7 4500U?
they have "original deck parts"…? where the OG audio board then?
1:19 casually ignoring the slower ram. For 300$ it's okayish.
The ayaneo is dead on arrival, Vega graphics are already obsolete in drivers from AMD.
My most wanted feature is NOT to have to install windows to run games with anti cheat
interested in the prospect of being able to utilize the ai cores on the og deck. staying tuned for more news on this
I'd like for the three-dot menu to mature to become an extensible ecosystem. Right now, it's some chat stuff, quick settings, and a media player for Steam library soundtracks. I'd like for it to be a full media player. I'd like there to be an app store for three-dot menu widgets, so I can get a mini-browser, or an RGB controller, or other chat apps, or some phone integration.
I already did the update for my steam deck from the 64 to a 240 ssd and I was very worried because I did do some investigations before doing that and I'm quite comfortable taking things apart and putting them back but the thing that the drive me a little bit crazy was that I saw that somebody else tried to do the same thing with his steam deck and on the video that he posted one of the chips of the steam deck got fried so I was very worried if something like that could happen but it hasn't happened I'm still doing some testing and I also let my steam deck rest but I would say don't just buy any ssd for your steam deck at least try to go for a reputable seller
I love your Steam Deck PS1 logo inspired design. I can easily imagine a Deck Boot Video with this design. Would be so cool!
This is the kind of title that makes me check to see if it’s the first day in April 😂
Thoughts on this story 🤔
I would like that they fix hdmi output video quality. All the games I play on the big screen are much darker than when I play them with my PC on the same screen.
I really can't blame Valve for shutting down Portal 64. It is their IP, after all. While I find the project fascinating, and wished I could've seen the final product, I'm not shocked or particularly disappointed.
If those are tensor cores I’m excited! I have an M2 iPad and with an app to generate images (running locally obviously, otherwise wouldn’t have anything to do with this) you can select what parts of the hardware gets used. Now, using the so called “ML cores” it gets a substantial speed boost, but that’s not the only thing: enabling power saving system wide makes it still faster than without ML cores, but now it wouldn’t heat up! So yeah, exciting thought.
Most wanted on deck: a gamepass app so I don't have to install windows on it 😭
Strange why no one is talking about the APU of the AyaNeo.
Its true that the chip is already 4 years old but it has a TDP of 25W and it has 8 Cores with 16 Threads.
It can run games well on the Vega chip and its pricing is attractive I have to admit.
We have to see once it comes out. Pretty exciting how the year has begun.
Was it that AMD drop support Vega GPU on windows?
Maybe Z1Extreme is simply binned 7840U (with some small firmware adjustment) – ones on which AI cores don't work correctly?
Pretty sure Windows is free to manufacturers for devices with screens below a certain size. Can't remember if the threshold is 8 or 10 inches.
can you do a tutorial on how to code your own theme on SteamOS? I do know CSS, however do not know how to apply it to the UI
I’m watching this video.
With my ears.
And occasionally my eyes.
Also, Valve is usually a good enough company, right?
anyone have issue with a bumbper [left in my case] being mushy and sticking? Its been like this since I got it [lcd version] and didn't send it back because 90% of games I play don't use it but now all the sudden multiple games Im playing use it, one of which is having issues with rebinding. if anyone can give me a heads up of what to look for if I break open the case and try a fix that'd be cool
The problem is in the courts if you knowingly allow your IP to be used without licensing and then proceed to pick and choose who can use it, then you will likely lose your IP to public donain. Its a necessary evil to protect.
I remember when this happened in the past, the reason for those takedowns were, if they don't do it, after a certain time they'd lose the rights. So they have to do it before this happens.
The only big issue that I have with steam OS is that if you connect peripherals that have an audio output, audio settings sometimes get really messed up.
For example when I connected a PS5 controller, The audio switched over to the controller's output. Switching over to speakers in the settings led to no actual audio output. I had to go into desktop mode and turn off both the controller output and "Pro audio" before things started working properly again.
Not a feature request but it is the one bug that I have experienced that has actually given me pause. I hope they fix it
Also sometimes I don't get audio over HDMI connections to TV / monitors
